Imperial Gig
Mark Bridgeman

A poorly regarded some would say awful design that seems to be of no practical use to anyone, the gig can be used as a small carrier for cargo and important mail deliveries, and as an auxiliary fighting ship. This version however is underpowered, and lacks the agility that's essential to a small deep space fighter. The problems associated with this design eventually led to the creation of the Imperial Heavy Fighter. Crew detail is normally 1 commander, 1 pilot and 1 gunner, though in a pinch it only takes the pilot to fly the craft and oversee the automated drive section.

Irandia Class Gig

An improved version of the gig more acceptable and useful with local militaries that find its high speed ideal for fleet courier detail, and short-range high-speed patrols, such as customs inspections, picket or blockade duty. This version though officially tagged as a tl-12 design could be reliably and easily constructed at tl-9 though it would have to rely on the C.D.S.D. option for thrust, though this is scarcely an issue as it would rarely be used for deep space operations (beyond the immediate solar system). Hull armour has been sacrificed to allow larger manoeuvre drives, and armament changed to missiles rather than lasers to reduce power needs on the vessel. This design was also fitted with shielded missile magazines at the expense of cargo so that the vessel could be mounted with nuclear missiles if more offensive punch was needed.

Mycenae Class Gig

This version of the gig, suffers a further reduction in cargo capacity, missile magazine space and a slight reduction in drive speed to accommodate two small cabins in order to allow the craft to function as a high speed VIP transport (popular with the military). It also has upgraded sensors and communicators, unlike other versions of the gig this design has excess power available to the drive making it extremely agile for such a small craft (indeed this factor alone makes it a better fighter than many other gig designs common in and around the Imperium. The flight deck is cramped and accommodates 2 workstations (1 for the pilot/commander and one for the gunner). The two small cabins can either be used by the crew on long duration missions/patrols or as a small though plush executive passenger suite (ideal for ferrying admirals and the like for short journeys between ships in an allied fleet etc).

In extreme circumstances the gig can be used as a lifeboat though life-support would be strained by any more than 5 aboard, not to mention that this version does not include emergency low berths.

The ultimate evolution of the gig becomes the heavy fighter, early versions of which are simply air-framed gigs with a fixed forward firing laser lance, allowing 1 crewmember to function as both gunner and pilot, as the weapon is aimed by orientating the fighter towards its target etc.
