Royal Class Luxury Liner
Mark Bridgeman

A relatively common sight in and around the core Imperial worlds that have sufficient populations and a mobile enough citizenry that demand for passage to other worlds is quite high. The liner is designed to meet the needs of both the business and the recreational traveller, employing highly skilled staff to entertain and generally pamper the guests aboard, with the very finest of cuisine from all over Imperial space. Accommodations aboard are slightly on the small side, with as much space as possible given to passenger lounges, restaurants, gift shops, salons, casinos and ballrooms, gymnasiums and health spas, not to mention other common areas such as corridors, and lifts to other floors. The small size of the most cabins is scarcely an issue though, as passengers are encouraged to get out and enjoy the delights around them. Décor is tasteful, elegant and luxurious throughout all 24 double sized (super high passage) suites, the 50 standard (high passage) staterooms and all 1070 small cabins.

Apart from the stewards required to look after this many passengers, each liner also employs a specialist crew of orchestra members and entertainers (there is a 42 piece Sylean style orchestra aboard) and are given passenger cabins for their accommodations in order to encourage them to socialise and interact with the passengers whenever possible as they tend to make generally entertaining and interesting travelling companions. In addition to their main duties they are often asked to give impromptu shows all over the ship, making the most of the many and diverse passenger lounges and are considered on duty as long as they're awake, as compensation for this they are paid handsomely averaging Cr3, 000 per month and treated as high passengers whilst aboard, even though they sleep in mid passage cabins. Needless to say a ship as busy as this enjoys its downtime (i.e. the week in port when passengers are embarking or disembarking) and normally one or two days of the week the ship can be found to be empty aside from crew (many of which take shore leave) which is essential for maintenance and cleaning and repair duties, not to mention, restock and supply of consumables.

Crew quarters are quite separate and well away from passenger areas, the ships captain has an extra large suite, whilst his officers all enjoy a single large stateroom, other crew members all have a small cabin each and that they can call their own and count themselves lucky that at least they don't have to share with anyone else as is common aboard other vessels.

The cargo hold is small, though sufficient to contain any possessions of passengers that cannot be stowed in their suites whilst aboard, though for the most part it normally contains additional life support supplies and a few spare parts for essential ship systems.

Each liner of this class is named for a significant member of the Imperial Royal Family, such as 'Princess Ilea' and of course the 'Emperor Cleon Zhunastu' the flag ship of the fleet and tend to stick to a designated route close to the Imperial core in order to maintain profitability.

In times of major conflict it is expected that these ships would be mobilised if necessary to support the Imperial Navy, and converted into troop carriers etc (though as the Imperium is growing stronger this is looking less and less likely).

The design of the ship means that it cannot land and take off from planetary surfaces though it can skim for fuel, hence all servicing of the craft and passenger embarkation and leaving etc has to be done in orbit, normally as it makes scheduled stops this isn't an issue as most core world have high-ports and other orbital stations the liner can dock, or in some cases a shuttle or other tender will be sent out to the liner to transfer passengers, take off cargo and supply consumables etc. The ship also has dedicated hanger space for a 100-ton passenger shuttle (this is not included in the price) so that they can conduct their own passenger/cargo transfers if need be.

Though rarely threatened each liner is equipped with an extensive defensive grid of beam lasers and sandcasters, the sand canisters of which are stored in missile magazines supplied with future upgrades in mind, as sandcasters can be easily removed and missile turrets emplaces instead, with the magazine space readily available.

The illustration of the Liner on Page 26 of the T4 Starships book shows the vessel flying upside down relative to the outside observer
