| Military Frontier
Cruiser Mark Bridgeman The Military Frontier Cruiser is a new class of fighting ship, built from the keel up to be a versatile patrol/escort/destroyer capable of independent operations in addition to attachment to a fleet. Its high performance 4G m-drive allows it to rapidly cross systems and intercept slower moving merchant or corsair vessels heading to and from a jump point, whilst its powerful primary armament a 100 ton double barrelled Particle Accelerator bay coupled with missile and laser armament is more than enough to destroy or severely damage weaker foes. In addition to protecting the trade lanes this class of ship is often seen operating independently or in a flotilla beyond the Imperial fringe, showing the flag at solitary or distant worlds and supporting Imperial interests wherever they may be usually in places where the deployment of a typical Imperial battleship or cruiser (30,000 tons or more) would be considered uneconomical or overly ostentatious. In order to promote maximum versatility of use it comes equipped (and hence included in the price) with a high performance gig, a modular cutter and marine assault module, a launch and a ship's boat. The marine assault module is sometimes exchanged for a navy gunboat module if mission requirements mandate this. Interior hanger space can easily be changed to accommodate a wing of fighters instead if desired. Crew accommodations are cramped though crew lounges are large and comfortable, the ship's captain has the use of a large double stateroom suite, the executive officer has a standard stateroom whilst all other crew including marines/troops have the use of an individual small cabin. The ships medical crew oversee the (16 ton sick bay) and emergency low berths used for containment of low priority prisoners and to keep injured crew members alive until they can be treated at an appropriate Imperial or allied medical facility. The 56-ton cargo bay is adequate to store supplies and needed equipment and spare life support filters/resources etc for long duration missions. Missile ordnance is stored in dedicated magazines designed to feed the missile ammunition directly to the turrets to allow rapid reloading and maximum combat efficiency to support one hundred battery rounds, so that even a multiple of battles could be fought beyond normal Imperial supply lines before re-supply is needed. Sand canisters are also directly fed to the turrets though do not require protective magazines, as they are non-explosive. The frontier cruiser is not designed to fight larger craft so capitol ship defences such as a meson screen or nuclear damper were not installed, though it does carry increased armour protection ideal for defence against typical ship mounted weaponry common to small merchants and light paramilitary or military ships. Vessels of this class can often be found propping up the reserve fleets of the Imperium and commanding small task forces consisting of military and civilian shipping such as medical missions to stricken worlds or other disaster zones. In which case civilian merchantmen of jump 2 or more are often pressed into service to assist such a flotilla. Beyond the imperial fringe in places where competing governments are hostile to Emperor and his glorious vision of a united empire stretching across the former territories of the first and second Imperium, these also make extremely effective raiders, (though full scale war would have to be declared first).
